Parental Mental Disorders and Children’s Sex and Contraception

Wednesday, March 12, 2025
Time: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. (ET)

Presenter: William Axinn

Description

This webinar links the new CVFS-YAS continuous measures of sex and contraceptive use to the prior measures of parental mental health. This design allows investigation of the associations between parental major depressive disorder (MDD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) and their children’s sex and contraceptive use years later, during the transition to adulthood. The CVFS-YAS measures sexual activity independent of marriage, identifying both premarital sex and months after marriage with no sexual activity. The CVFS-YAS also measures contraceptive use and method choice independent of sexual activity, to identity months of sexual activity with no contraceptive use. By linking these two elements of CVFS we are able to document associations between parental mental disorders and their children’s premarital sex, post-marital times of no sex, and sex without contraceptive use. Discussion will focus on additional potential uses of the CVFS-YAS data. There will be a Q&A session after the presentation.
